Discord has become an integral part of gaming communities, giving users communication options like Voice Chat to bring players together; now, it seems like they're bringing those features to PlayStation 5 consoles soon.

Complete with VoIP, instant messaging, and expansive servers, Discord first launched in 2015 as a social platform specifically for gaming. Over the course of the past seven years, the platform has now amassed over 350 million registered users. Given its intent to connect gaming communities, users can connect their Discord profiles to their Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Twitch accounts, among many others.

Now, Discord is stepping up its partnership with PlayStation in a major way. As reported by Tom Henderson, PlayStation players may be getting full integration of Discord as soon as the end of this year.

Discord Voice Chat Is Coming To PlayStation

In May of 2021, PlayStation first announced its partnership with Discord. President and CEO Jim Ryan commented then, "Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together."

Ryan went on to say, "Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services." Finally, it seems that a major milestone of this journey is finally coming to the PS5.

As of right now, the integration is expected to come with version 7.00. Given that version 6.00 is coming mid-September, this would likely place version 7.00's launch at the end of this year. This means that PlayStation users will soon be able to use Discord straight from the console.

Henderson also reported that the Discord integration has currently been undergoing QA testing, stating that the progress is going "very well." Hopefully, this implies that Discord will interact smoothly with games on the console, allowing users to voice chat and communicate without having to utilize multiple devices.

How much this will change PlayStation gaming is to be seen, but it certainly presents a much more convenient way to connect with other players. Unfortunately, we do not currently have a specific date for when this integration will launch.
