Following the release of Dishonored in 2016 and last year's spin-off Death of the Outsider, many fans have wondered what would be next for the immersive sim series. According to one of Arkane's developers, you shouldn't expect to hear much from the franchise soon.

This past weekend at QuakeCon, Arkane's lead designer Ricardo Bare spoke to VG24/7 about the current status of the Dishonored series and said that as of now, the series is "resting."  Bare's full statement was as follows:

"I can’t say definitively what might happen down the road, anything could happen, but [Dishonored] is resting for now. As far as pure immersive sims go, I don’t know if we’re going to continue to make like carbon copy – this qualifies as an immersive sim and it’s the only thing we’re ever going to make."

Bare went on to talk a bit more about Arkane's future and how they approach each of their projects no matter what property it may be -- DishonoredPrey, or something entirely different. He also stated that the studio might be open to trying new things in the future.

“The things that are important to us as a studio are coherent, deep world building and environmental storytelling – we’re always going to craft spaces that you feel like you’re visiting, whether it’s Dunwall or Talos 1. It’s just as important a character as the player or the people you meet. Then it’s improvisational gameplay – giving players a bunch of cool abilities and tools, then saying, ‘You figure it out, you be creative, you own the experience’. And, typically, we stick to first-person, though that’s not a hard rule and we might try other things from time to time.”

Regardless of what's next for Arkane, they seem to know what their strengths are as a studio and aren't going to stray too much from the winning formula that has been seen in both Dishonored and Prey. Even if we don't hear from Dishonored again specifically for some time, there's no doubt that Arkane's next creation will still have that same level of polish and phenomenal level design that we've come to expect from the developer.
