Does Call of Duty: Vanguard Have Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM)?

Is it going to be another year of painful SBMM?

November 4, 2021

Call of Duty: Vanguard has finally arrived, but fans are eager to know if the game’s multiplayer mode is going to feature skill-based matchmaking and if so, is it going to be as prevalent as it was in Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War?

Skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) is always a hot topic in the Call of Duty community, it often causes heated debates and splits the community. But don’t worry if you’re not quite sure what the term actually means, because we’ve got you covered.

What Is Skill-Based Matchmaking?

Skill-based matchmaking is a simple feature that often causes a lot of outrage in the gaming community.

If a game has skill-based matchmaking, it will automatically fill the multiplayer lobby with other players that are on the same skill level as you. For example, if a player has a 2.0 K/D ratio on Call of Duty, they will likely be matched with players that have a similar K/D ratio.

This is done to keep multiplayer games fair and balanced but often ends with the community asking for a specific ranked mode in the game instead of SBMM in standard multiplayer.

Does Call of Duty: Vanguard Have Skill-Based Matchmaking?

As of writing, Sledgehammer Games are yet to comment on the inclusion of skill-based matchmaking in Call of Duty: Vanguard and likely won’t announce if it will be in the game.

However, skill-based matchmaking has been in Call of Duty’s Multiplayer for quite some years now and is unlikely to change anytime soon despite resistance from the community.

Although the game’s developers are yet to comment, reliable Call of Duty leaker TheMW2Ghost did state back in August that Call of Duty: Vanguard will have skill-based matchmaking, and it will operate the same as it did in Black Ops Cold War.

Should Sledgehammer Games ever comment on SBMM in Call of Duty: Vanguard, we will update this article.
