Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. It can make you so affectionate towards things in your past that you probably convince yourself that you still enjoy them. I’ve had friends go out of their way to buy Transformers action figures at Target, and then tell the cashier, no, thank you, they will not be needing a gift receipt with that today. And that’s why I think the marketing vector for My First Trainz Set on Android is a little odd: they seem to think that people will only be buying this for their children. Their press release includes lines like “Build Team-Work! Your kids will never get along better than this as they work together to build tracks that will WOW you.” But if they just told you to remember all those wonderful times that you sat alone in your room and played with your own model trains as a child, and hey, you can have all those same experiences TODAY with beautiful Nvidia-powered graphics on your Xoom tablet, I think they may find a few more sales piling up for this thing.
So go ahead. Give it a look. Eight-year-old you will thank you. Just, uh… Just don’t play it in public.
