Demon-Invading Multiplayer Will be Added to DOOM Eternal

Demon-Invading Multiplayer Will be Added to DOOM Eternal

id Software revealed a new style of multiplayer will be present in the upcoming sequel DOOM Eternal.

Among the many, many announcements for DOOM Eternal at QuakeCon this morning, id Software revealed one major new aspect of the sequel that will involve multiplayer.

id Software’s Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin revealed that DOOM Eternal will allow players to take control of demons from the world of DOOM and enter into other player’s campaigns in the pursuit of taking them down. This feature isn’t only a solo job though, as Stratton also said you can team up with other players to create a “Slayer Hunting Party” comprised of various demons from the series.

This style of multiplayer is most similar to that of — not this comparison again — Dark Souls, which also allowed you to invade the campaigns of other players. Fear not though, as DOOM Eternal will allow you to freely shut this feature off if you’d rather not be interrupted while playing.

As for the status of DOOM Eternal having arena-based multiplayer, id Software didn’t provide any information on if this will be making its way back into the sequel. The multiplayer in 2016’s DOOM was received rather negatively by both fans and critics, so it wouldn’t be a shock to just see id opt to completely abandon it this time around.

There’s still a lot left to learn about DOOM Eternal and especially this style of multiplayer and we’ll surely get those details in time as we continue to near release. Currently, DOOM Eternal doesn’t have a release date but it’ll be coming to PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC whenever it arrives.
