The Dragon Age franchise is full of admirable video games that stand out from one another. Featuring an extensive story and a well-developed cast of characters, you're bound to be captured by Dragon Age. Because of how detailed the story and the lore of these games are, you'll spend quite a bit of time in Dragon Age's fantasy world. More importantly, the majority of your time will be spent with companions that you befriend on your journey.

Because of the number of characters in the entire series, it's hard to pick out only a few that can be deemed the best. While some of them are admittedly more iconic than others, these companions represent the heart of the Dragon Age franchise itself.

13 Sera

Sera talking to someone off-screen (Dragon Age: Inquisition)

Sera is one of those characters you'll either adore entirely or be annoyed with. She has an impulsive nature, and it's hard to persuade her to not follow her personal values or ethics. She'll always say what comes to her mind, even if it might be hurtful.

Sera is an incredible companion to have at your side. She might not be everyone's cup of tea, but she'll always be loyal and true to you if you let her trust you. Throughout all the chaos, she will stand beside you.

12 Iron Bull

Iron Bull (Dragon Age: Inquisition)

Leader of the Bull's Chargers, Iron Bull (or, as he'll correct you in the game, THE Iron Bull) is a one-eyed Qunari that is a softie at heart. First impressions alone, he is intimidating and stoic. But, when you take the time to get to know him, he's quite the charmer.

He is also one of the most beautiful romance options in Dragon Age: Inquisition due to his ever-so-loving nature when he's warmed up to you. Overall, getting on Iron Bull's good side is satisfying and entertaining.

11 Aveline Vallen

Aveline Vallen (Dragon Age II)

Being one of the voices of reason for Hawke in Dragon Age II, Aveline is a warrior through and through. She's easy to befriend and can be a guardian angel with how protective of you she can be.

Aveline is truly an underrated companion. Her dry humor and ability to be serious when needed can make her the group's backbone. Some might find her to be a bit strict, but it's all to keep everything in order. It also shouldn't be forgotten how wonderfully combative she is in battles.

10 Fenris

Fenris holding a bottle of wine (Dragon Age II)

Fenris is a wonderful combination of being an iconic companion and an incredible romance interest. He is an eleven warrior and fugitive slave, making him rather distrustful of mages and striving to protect other slaves.

His backstory adds a lot to the overarching plot of the sequel. He is incredibly well-developed, and his personal quests showcase how he grows as a character over the course of the game. Fenris is a faithful companion, always sticking by your side. But, only as long you don't deal with the slavers.

9 Isabela

Isabela (Dragon Age II)

This pirate ship's captain (called the Siren's Call) is a witty and entertaining companion who always works to stay out of others' business. Isabela tends to be a fun character that loves talking sarcastically and making jokes.

If you stay out of others' ways and focus on your own task at hand, Isabela quickly warms up to you. After you first meet her, you might feel wary as she appears deceptive at first. But, in actuality, Isabela is the heart of Dragon Age II's humor.

8 Vivienne

Vivienne (Dragon Age: Inquisition)

Vivienne isn't usually everyone's favorite companion. The Orlesian mage is snarky toward you at times, and it's nearly impossible to get her to budge from her personal values and beliefs.

She's incredibly fond of politics and is strongly against the violence from the mage rebellion. Altogether, this makes her sound like not a great companion. But, because of how well-written her character arc is, Inquisition's story wouldn't be quite the same without her. Even if you disagree with her, she believes she means well.

7 Cassandra Pentaghast

From her death glare alone, it's easy to assume that it wouldn't be easy to get along with Cassandra. But, much like Iron Bull, Cassandra is a big softie deep down inside. However, she's only nice to those that she trusts.

Cassandra's emotional walls quickly come down if you stay in her good graces. Especially if you pursue a romance with her, allowing her to show you her poetic and hopeless romantic side. In other words, she can become the greatest friend that you never knew you needed.

6 Dorian Pavus

Dorian Pavus leaned against a wall (Dragon Age: Inquisition)

Playfully flirty and beyond witty, Dorian is more than just a pretty face. Even though it takes a bit of time, eventually discovering his tragic backstory is rewarding. Better yet, it makes us feel connected to him because of how secure he feels with us.

Always flirting with Dorian guarantees approval from him. He usually goes with the flow, except when it comes to remarks about Tevinter and mages. Dorian's confidence is utterly infectious, as he already knows that it's more than easy for anyone to adore him.

5 Leliana

Leliana looking off to the side (Dragon Age: Inquisition)

Leliana has always been with us. She's kept us on our toes as she's amazingly unpredictable. From being a bard to becoming a spymaster, she's been through it all.

When we meet her in Dragon Age: Origins, she is upbeat and passionate. But, because of all the tragedies and betrayals that she later endured, it's almost like talking to a brick wall when we see her again in Inquisition. It's possible to bring her back to her former self, but the journey to get to that point is an emotional one.

4 Solas

Solas lovingly staring at the Inquisitor (Dragon Age: Inquisition)

Despite appearing as your run-of-the-mill mage, Solas has tricks up his sleeve. He's an eleven apostate that's knowledgeable about The Fade. If your inquisitor is either a mage or an elf (or both), Solas is friendly to you from the start.

He's an unforgettable romance option, but it's important to note that you must be wary of getting too involved with him. Solas is an elusive soul that we always want to know more about. Sadly, no matter what you do, he will usually keep his secrets to himself.

3 Alistair

Alistair sitting down on the ground (Dragon Age: Origins)

This beloved Grey Warden is one of our first companions. Alistair tries to act tougher than he is, even though we know that he's far from it. He quickly bonds with you after the beginning of Origins.

Alistair is typically the first romance option that players will go for. And this is for good measure due to him being a loyal partner that would do anything for you. He's highly relatable a lot of the time, which makes it easier to connect with him on any level.

2 Varric Tethras

If you let each other in, Varric can become one of your closest friends. In Dragon Age II, Hawke and Varric were attached at the hip by the end. But, after the game's events, he avoids becoming close to anyone else.

Continuously talking to Varric in Inquisition showcases a beautiful case of gaining friendships when you're initially hesitant to. Selfless deeds and acting humbly are key to gaining Varric's approval. At his core, he is a soft-hearted person that only strives to see the good in the world.

1 Morrigan

Morrigan smiling (Dragon Age: Origins)

Even though she would never fully admit it, this sacred Witch of the Wilds always has your back. She possesses a special kind of magic, utilizing shape-shifting abilities that come in clutch at surprising times.

Morrigan stands out with much effort it takes to become close to her. It's always unclear what the right thing to say to her is, which is hard to blame her for since she originally didn't plan on tagging along with you. All-in-all, she's an asset in combat and has fascinating character development.
