At Jump Festa 2020, Square Enix and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii announced a new game adaptation for Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken, a manga known in the world either as Fly or Dragon Quest: The Adventures of Dai. This new game based on Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai will have Ryutaro Ichimura as its producer. He was the producer of Dragon Quest XI and multiple other Dragon Quest games. Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai's platforms and release date estimates weren't announced yet by Square Enix. However, during the event, Yuji Horii strongly hinted that it'll release on home consoles, not on smartphones.

At the same time, a new anime adaptation for Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken was announced. The anime is produced by Toei Animation and it'll air in Fall 2020. A teaser trailer for both the anime adaptation and game adaptation was published by Toei Animation and can be found below. A twitter account and an official site for the anime were also opened.

The original Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai manga was published in Japan from 1989 to 1996 and was the first long-term manga linked to the Dragon Quest JRPG series. Written by Riku Sanjo and illustrated by Koji Inada, The Adventure of Dai was published in Weekly Shonen Jump, and it's one of the magazine's biggest successes, with over 47 million volumes copies sold. An anime adaptation already happened back in the nineties, and it aired in many countries in Europe and Latin America under the name Fly, making it an extremely popular series in these parts of the world.

Riku Sanjo and Koji Inada, later on, collaborated again to make Beet the Vandel Buster. Riku Sanjo and Koji Inada also made a surprise appearance at the event, with a shikishi of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai character Avan.

The original Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken manga will also be republished every week for free on the Shonen Jump + app. Starting January 6, the 1991 anime will also be available in multiple Japanese VOD services.

Rather than a Dragon Quest XII, this new Dragon Quest; The Adventure of Dai game is probably the new "Dragon Quest HD game" Square Enix was recruiting for. A Dragon Quest IX Switch remake was also teased a few months ago. Dragon Quest Heroes 3 might happen one day too. Lastly, Dragon Quest XI just reached over 5.5 million copies sold.
