E3 2011: Rocksmith Appeals to Experienced and Beginning Guitarists Alike

As a drummer, rhythm games have always appealed and made sense to me. Be it playing the plastic guitar from Guitar Hero or the fake drums in Rock Band, it’s all essentially the same thing for me. Almost every guitarist I’ve ever met though has had trouble with those games, as it’s NOTHING like really playing the guitar.

Ubisoft is aiming to change that with Rocksmith, which uses a real guitar for the controller, and you actually play the full song on higher difficulties. Not just a special bundled guitar either, you can plug in ANY guitar and use it. They’re really looking to appeal to a wide audience, from people who already know how to play guitar down to those who have never picked up the instrument in their life.

With the success of all these music games over the years, it’ll be interesting to see how this approach works.

John is what you might call something of a badass. When he's not writing about games or playing them, he's playing in the Kansas City band "Documentary" and drinking as many different beers as often as he can. He's a huge comic nerd in the best sense of the term, with a particular love for the Creator Owned movement.
