Final Fantasy VII Remake was the biggest success of Square Enix in 2020, so it shouldn't be long until a proper reveal for FF7R Part 2 comes around - perhaps at E3 2021?

E3 2021 closely follows the launch of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on PS5, making it the perfect occasion for Square Enix to tease more about the sequel.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 - What we know so far

First, let's look back at the history of FF7 Remake. The game was first announced at E3 2015, and was co-developed between Square Enix and CyberConnect2, the studio currently working on Demon Slayer The Hinokami Chronicles.

However, in 2017, Square Enix announced the development of Final Fantasy VII Remake was fully moved in-house, hinting at development issues. Taking this point into account, the next games of the remake might not take as long as the first one to release.

Moreover, Square Enix had announced from the get-go that the Final Fantasy 7 remake project would span multiple games. Many fans were very skeptical of this decision at first, but after the release of the first game in April 2020, it was made clear that several major changes to the original's storyline were made, justifying the multiple games aspect.

It's also interesting to note that Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 is only a placeholder name. Square Enix confirmed to be working on the sequel as far as 2019, before the first game was released. However, the sequel was never properly announced with a title.

Recently, Tetsuya Nomura teased that FF7R Part 2 will feature Cloud running in the wilderness, hinting that we'll fully get to explore the world of Final Fantasy 7 beyond Midgar, like with the world map in the original. It's still unclear if the game will be an open world, however.

Tetsuya Nomura also confirmed FF7R Part 2 will be a direct sequel to the events shown in Intermission, the Yuffie DLC on PS5. Lastly, Square Enix never stated whether part 2 will be the final game or if a third one is in development.

FF7R Part 2 facts list:

  • We don't know yet how many FF7R games there will be in total
  • It's possible Part 2 has an open world replacing the original game's world map
  • Part 2 is a direct sequel to the Yuffie DLC, so it's important to play the PS5 exclusive DLC to fully understand what will come next

Will Square Enix showcase FF7R Part 2 at E3 2021? Leaks and rumors

With the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on PS5, Square Enix should now be moving its promotional efforts towards Part 2. FF7R has already been present at many E3 showcases in the past, and it's also the event where the game's very first reveal was held.

With that said, a certain insider who goes by the name Navtra, who shared legit leaks in the past, recently shared that they don't believe FF7R Part 2 will show up at E3 2021. You should be taking this with a grain of salt, as Square Enix hasn't made any official announcements.

Personally speaking, I strongly believe Square Enix will at least bring up Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 in some way, perhaps at least revealing the game's official title. The Japanese company must have several surprises in store for E3 2021, and I definitely expect to see something about Part 2.

Either way, we only have a few hours to wait until Summer Games Fest on June 10, followed by the Square Enix E3 showcase on June 13. For now, Square Enix offiically confirmed the presence of Babylon's Fall, Life is Strange True Colors, and Marvel's Avengers.
