EA and Disney Sign Multi-Year Star Wars Games Agreement Involving BioWare, DICE and Visceral

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of EA haters suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced…

After closing LucasArts, The Walt Disney Company had to find someone to develop new games based on the recently acquired Star Wars franchise, but instead of using its own Disney Interactive Studios the animation giant decided to give the license to someone else. That someone else is Electronic Arts, as communicated in a press release that just hit the fa… ahem, the Internet.

The deal establishes that Electronic Arts will develop and publish new Star Wars titles aimed at core gamers and “spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres”. Disney will retain “certain rights  to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories”.

Co-President of Disney Interactive John Pleasants released a statement commenting the agreement:

This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come. Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world.

Pleasants’ satisfaction was echoed by EA Labels President Frank Gibeau:

Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe. Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.

While the internet is probably about to implode into an enormous black hole, I have to say that the possibility to finally see BioWare developing Knights of the Old Republic III, or DICE putting their hands on the Star Wars: Battlefront franchise most definitely tickles my fancy.

May the Force be with us all, and with BioWare, DICE and Visceral. They’ll need all the help they can get.
