EA Takes a Stand on Same-Sex Relationships

So, if you’ve ever played a BioWare game, you might have noticed that most of them will let your main character into some sort of virtual relationship with at least one NPC. The same can be said about other games not even created in the EA circle. There are many RPGs out there that have stories involving crushes, romances, marriages, and even having children.

Unfortunately, EA has been targeted by a few anti-gay and lesbian groups who claim to be outraged by the inclusion of same-sex relationships, even threatening to boycott games unless the publisher removes the content. EA’s answer was simple: No.

“Every one of EA’s games includes ESRB content descriptors so it’s hard to believe anyone is surprised by the content. This isn’t about protecting children, it’s about political harassment,” Jeff Brown, VP of corporate communications.

So why all the fuss about allowing relationships from both sides of the fence? With the new MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council says:

“The biggest threat to the empire may be homosexual activists!”

Here I thought it was the Jedi Order, but what do I know?

One of the more intelligent comments I’ve ever read about the relationships in BioWare games were that the companions are just starstruck and you play the star, regardless of your real life or in-game gender. Be flattered and if you’re not interested, avoid clicking the giant red heart options.

Coming for a lady that only plays male characters with no interest in being a lesbian in-game or not, I appreciate the choices. Star Wars: The Old Republic doesn’t have the option, so I avoid romancing all together. My male Bounty Hunter is saving himself for Torian, after all.

Hey, I’ve read the lore. It’s allowed.
