Today D3 Publisher revealed the first screenshots of its newly announced PS4 exclusive Earth Defense Force 4.1: Wing Diver The Shooter, which was recently showcased on Famitsu.

As the title suggests, the game is a shooter, but not in the way you'd expect from an  Earth Defense Force game. It's actually a vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up based on the EDF universe.

Based on the story of Earth Defense Force 4.1: Shadows of New Despair, this new game follows the philosophy "avoid everything, shoot everything, destroy everything," with the player donning the suit of a female Wing Diver soldier.

The game includes more than sixty different kinds of weapons to use, including "Ixion," "Rapier," "Mirage," "Thunder Sniper," "LAZR," and "Plasma Launcher". There will be both guns specific to Wing Divers in the previous game, as well as original ones.

The story will span six different missions that will send a ton of different enemies at the player. Of course massive bosses will also be included.

During the missions we'll see communication from other characters on screen with full voice acting, soldiers fighting on the ground, and civilians escaping. At certain points in each mission the scrolling will stop, and the "Shootup Time" will begin, with an avalanche of enemies coming at the player. Killing many enemies in a row will trigger a "combo" and a higher score can be achieved.

There will be five difficulty levels (easy, normal, hard, hardest and inferno), and online leaderboards.

Incidentally, the press release also discloses that Earth Defense Force 4 and Earth Defense Force 4.1: Shadows of New Despair sold 850,000 units combined.

You can check out the screenshots below. The game will release in Japan this Fall.
