EA’s Smart Delivery Won’t Support Upgrades Between Physical PS4 Games to Digital PS5 Games

EA confirms that players won't be able to upgrade a digital version of a current-generation game for a physical next-generation title for Madden NFL 21.

In a report from VGC, EA’s smart delivery system won’t allow players to upgrade physical PlayStation 4 titles to digital titles for the PlayStation 5.

“EA are actively looking at solutions to support those players who want to convert their physical copy to a digital entitlement,” says EA in an FAQ. “Currently no upgrade pathway exists from ‘disc to digital’ for those partners who offer a Next Generation discless console but we will continue to share any progress made in that space.”

This news comes after EA announced their Dual Entitlement Program which is their answer to Xbox’s Smart Delivery system. For example, EA’s program will let players upgrade their digital PlayStation 4 version of Madden NFL 21 and get the digital PlayStation 5 version at no extra charge. As they say in the FAQ, it won’t work if you want to upgrade a physical PS4 version of the game and get a digital PS5 version. Currently, EA’s Dual Entitlement Program only supports Madden NFL 21 but they’ll have more information during their EA Play event on June 18 at 4:00 PM PT, 7:00 PM EST.

The game received its gameplay trailer recently, which included a look at cover star Lamar Jackson in action. Additionally, it shows off the Skill Stick feature which will make things like ball-carrying, pass-rushing, and tackling on defense more fluid. Prior to this, the game made an appearance during Microsoft’s Inside Xbox showcase last month.

Madden NFL 21 launches on August 28 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. While there’s no release date for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, the game will arrive on those platforms as well. If you’re interested in checking it out, you can watch the gameplay reveal below. We should also receive more details on the game plus other EA titles during EA Play this Thursday.
