Gurranq, Beast Clergyman is an NPC that can be encountered pretty early on in the game during a typical Elden Ring playthrough. Even though he looks quite scary, the Beast Clergyman is a friendly (for the most part) NPC and rewards players with a variety of useful items and Incantations during his questline.

Gurranq has a simple but very time-consuming questline that requires players to travel all over the Lands Between in search of Deathroots. The Beast Clergyman rewards players for every Deathroot they find and offers a rare prize to those who manage to deliver all of them.

The Bestial Sanctum Location

Deathroot in Summonwater Village

Gurranq can be found in the Bestial Sanctum in northeastern Dragonbarrow, a dangerous area that’s difficult to reach early on in the game. Luckily, Elden Ring offers a convenient shortcut in the form of a waygate you can use to directly reach the Bestial Sanctum without having to pass through Caelid and Dragonbarrow. However, there are a couple of things you should do before you teleport there.

Your first order of business is to travel to Summonwater Village in northeastern Limgrave. From the Saintbridge Site of Grace, take the road east, and you’ll reach the village in no time. Once you’re about halfway there, you’ll stumble across an NPC near the road who introduces himself as D, Hunter of the Dead. D warns you to stay away from the village because it is infested by the undead and there’s even a Tibia Mariner skulking about there. As it happens, the Tibia Mariner drops a Deathroot, the very same item Gurranq is seeking, so proceed to the village and slay the monster.

Once you’ve collected the Deathroot, return to D, who will be either just outside the village or at Roundtable Hold, depending on whether you used the nearby Site of Grace after the fight. Upon seeing the item, D will tell you a bit about Gurranq, Beast Clergyman and will point you in the direction of a waygate located behind the Third Church of Marika. Activating the waygate will take you directly to the Bestial Sanctum where you can meet Gurranq.

Give Gurranq the Deathroot you’ve collected from the Tibia Mariner and he will reward you with the Clawmark Seal, one of the best Sacred Seals in Elden Ring. In addition, the NPC will also give you the Beast Eye, a key item that lets you know whenever you’re close to an enemy that drops Deathroot.

Hungry, Hungry Beastman

From this point onward, all you have to do to complete the questline is deliver additional Deathroots to Gurranq. That’s easier said than done, however, as some of the Deathroots can only be found toward the end of the game. The good news is that you will receive a reward every time you deliver a Deathroot, so you’ll want to visit Gurranq again whenever you can get your hands on one. If you don’t want to miss out on any of the dialogue, make sure to feed him the Deathroots one by one.

There are nine Deathroots in total scattered across the Lands Between, including the one you got from the Tibia Mariner. The locations of the remaining ones along with instructions on how to get there can be found down below. These are listed roughly in the order you’re likely to encounter them during a regular playthrough, but feel free to visit the locations in any order you choose.

Deathtouched Catacombs

Deathtouched Catacombs Deathroot location

Located inside a chest in the Deathtouched Catacombs. The catacombs can be found east of Saintsbridge embedded in one of the hills overlooking the Site of Grace. The chest is the boss room guarded by a Black Knife Assassin. Do away with the mini boss and you’ll also score the Assassin’s Crimson Dagger Talisman.

Liurnia Of The Lakes East

Liurnia of the Lakes East Deathroot location

This one drops from a Tibia Mariner found in the eastern portion of Liurnia of the Lakes. The location is a bit inconspicuous, but you can find it just south of the Carian Study Hall. Start at the Artist’s Shack Site of Grace and take the road south. If you stay on the road you’ll eventually come across a flooded graveyard and its sole inhabitant, a Tibia Mariner.

Black Knife Catacombs

Black Knife Catacombs Deathroot location

Another Deathroot can be found inside a chest in the Black Knife Catacombs. You can find the catacombs northwest of the Converted Fringe Tower at the end of a ravine. You can use the platforms embedded into the side of the cliffs to make your way down there. Alternatively, you can start at the Ruined Labyrinth Site of Grace and take the road northeast. You’ll find the chest in the boss room guarded by a Cemetery Shade.

After delivering four Deathroots, Gurranq will become hostile and will attack you on your next visit to the Bestial Sanctum. Fight back and he’ll eventually calm down once you’ve taken a good chunk of his HP. Make sure you don’t kill him in the process. Once he backs down, reset the area and he’ll become friendly again, allowing you to continue the questline.

Wyndham Ruins

Wyndham Ruins Deathroot location

Drops from the Tibia Mariner that can be found paddling around Wyndham Ruins in Altus Plateau. The ruins can be found close to the Seethewater River Site of Grace but you’ll need to circumvent most of Mt. Gemir to reach them. A faster route would be to fight the Abductor Virgin at Raya Lucaria Academy. You can reach it by using the water wheel to get to the very bottom of the canyon. If you get killed by the Abductor Virgin’s special attack you will be transported to an area beneath Volcano Manor from where you can quickly reach the Wyndham Ruins.

Gelmir Hero’s Grave

Gelmir Hero's Grave Deathroot location

This next Deathroot can be found inside Gemir Hero’s Grave, an underground area located a little ways northeast of the Wyndham Ruins. You can quickly get there from the First Mt. Gelmir Campsite or, even faster, take the shortcut from Primeval Sorcerer Azur if you managed to track him down during Sorceress Sellen’s questline. Gelmir Hero’s Grave is a pain to navigate, but be persistent, and you’ll eventually run into a mini-boss called Red Wolf of the Champion. Slay the giant wolf, and you can find a Deathroot in the nearby chest.

Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs

Giants Mountaintop Catacombs Deathroot location

Clear the catacombs by defeating the Ulcerated Tree Spirit mini-boss, and you’ll find the Deathroot in a nearby chest. The catacombs can be found in the southern part of the Mountaintops of the Giants and can be quickly reached from the Zamor Ruins Site of Grace.

Mountaintops Of The Giants East

Mountaintops of the Giants East Deathroot location

Drops from the Tibia Mariner found in the cemetery southwest of Castle Sol, up on the hill. You can quickly reach the cemetery from the Snow Valley Ruins Site of Grace. Kill the Tibia Mariner and you’ll be rewarded with a greatsword called Helphen’s Steeple, in addition to the Deathroot.

Hidden Path To The Haligtree

Hidden Path to the Haligtree Deathroot location

Can be found in the boss room of the Hidden Path to the Haligtree catacombs. Kill the Stray Mimic Tear mini-boss and loot the Deathroot from the nearby chest. You can find the catacombs just south of the Consecrated Snowfield Site of Grace.
