Margit’s Shackle is a unique and powerful tool found in Murkwater Cave in Elden Ring's starting area of Limgrave. Margit’s Shackle offers several benefits beyond its main use for the boss fight against Margit, the Fell Omen, and it’s worth picking up -- even if you’d rather defeat Margit without any tricks. The shackle isn’t difficult to obtain, but it can be easy to miss if you make a few missteps.

The item description of Margit's Shackle reads:

A fetish bathed in golden magic. Shackles were used to bind the accursed people called the Omen, and these ones were made to keep a particular Omen under strictest confinement.

Though faint, the Shackles still retain vestiges of power—enough to trap the once-bound Margit on earth, if only for a short time

Find Margit’s Shackle in Murkwater Cave

Elden Ring Map of Limgrave, Murkwater Cave Marked
  • Head north up the river from Agheel Lake, east of the Church of Elleh. Note: if this is your first visit up this river, be prepared for an invasion from Bloody Finger Nerijus.
  • You'll find the entrance to Murkwater Cave ahead on your left.
  • Murkwater Cave itself is a fairly small dungeon occupied only by 7 highwaymen before you reach the boss.

  • Be careful of the bell chains set up on the floor. If you run into them, all of the highwaymen will aggro at once.
  • From the main room, turn right and follow the passage to the boss fog.
  • After entering the boss fog, you will find an empty campfire and an unopened chest.

Defeat Patches, The Untethered

Elden Ring Murkwater Cave featuring Patches after winning his boss fight (and sparing him).
  • Once you open the chest, Patches -- a familiar face for longtime FromSoftware fans—will leap down from above. His spear attacks do decent damage, but you should have little trouble dealing with him.
  • When his health reaches the halfway point, he’ll surrender. Stop attacking him, and he will beg your forgiveness. Whether you choose to forgive him or not, he will still offer to sell you items on your next visit.
  • Note: if you accidentally kill Patches, collect his Bell Bearing. You can acquire his merchandise later on in the Roundtable Hold.
  • Return to Murkwater Cave’s site of grace, rest, and head back to the boss room. You’ll now find Patches in his iconic squat, warming himself by the fire and offering to show you his wares.

You’ll notice another chest in the room after you return. Opening the chest will teleport you away to eastern Limgrave, and Patches will vanish from the cave. You’ll still be able to pursue Patches' quest later on in the game, but make sure to buy anything you want from him before opening the chest.

Margit’s Shackle can be purchased for 5,000 runes. A bit pricey, especially early on in the game, but well worth the purchase if you can swing it.

Use Margit’s Shackle Against Margit, The Fell Omen

Elden Ring Tarnished using Margit's Shackle against Margit, the Fell Omen boss fight.

Margit, the Fell Omen is the first main boss along the golden story path in Elden Ring. Despite being the intro boss, he can put up a pretty tough fight for Soulsborne veterans and newcomers alike, so some players might be on the hunt for any edge they can get. Enter: Margit's Shackle.

During your fight with Margit, The Fell Omen, you can use Margit’s Shackle to stun Margit, providing a few crucial moments to get some extra attacks in, unimpeded.

Margit’s Shackle can only be used twice against Margit and only during his first phase -- so once he pulls out his giant hammer of light, the shackle is no longer helpful.

Additional Hidden Benefits

Elden Ring Tarnished using Margit's Shackle to trigger a trap

While Margit's Shackle can be a blessing during Margit's boss fight, its other applications are arguably even more valuable.

  • It can be used to dispel any illusory walls in the nearby area. This can be especially useful for some of the trickier catacombs and dungeons littered across the Lands Between.
  • It can be used to trigger any traps in the nearby area. Again, extremely helpful to clear out certain enemies or disable certain traps which are already activated.
  • It can be used to destroy the dreaded Chariots in Auriza Hero’s Grave. Using this technique will not only be immensely satisfying and alleviate a massive headache, but it will also earn you the highly fashionable Tree Sentinel Armor set.
