Quick Links

On your journey through Elden Ring, you’ll occasionally encounter a field boss known simply as the Night’s Cavalry. These mysterious dark riders only appear at night in specific locations, and they provide unique Ashes of War, weapons, and armor upon defeating them. There are 10 total spread out across the Lands Between.

Elden Ring adopting Sekiro-style power scaling in Shadow of the Erdtree is inspired. If it works well, it should be the standard going forward.

In this guide, you will learn where to find these dangerous foes and what loot they drop after being slain. These riders can put up a decent fight, but if you manage to unseat the Night’s Cavalry (by slaying its steed) you will have the chance to land a critical blow on the rider. If given enough space after being dismounted, the Night’s Cavalry will re-summon their steed, so make sure you're focusing on damaging the rider rider directly — just be ready to take advantage once their steed fall.

Ash of War: Repeating Thrust

From Agheel Lake North site of grace, follow the road eastward to the bridge. Here, you will encounter the Night’s Cavalry field boss. Like many others, it is riding its black steed and wielding a Nightrider Glaive. This weapon has some surprising reach, so be careful. It’s easy to think you’re safely out of range when you aren’t. You might consider ranged weapons to weaken the Night's Cavalry from a distance before engaging in melee combat.

Why not bring along a powerful bow?

Upon defeat, this boss will drop 2,400 Runes and the Ash of War: Repeating Thrust.

After reaching the Castle Morne Rampart site of grace, you should spot the Night’s Cavalry just to the southwest, riding back and forth through the crumbling wall. He is wielding the Nightrider Flail. This weapon doesn’t have the reach of the Nightrider Glaive, but the Night’s Cavalry who wield the flail seem to be a bit more aggressive with their attacks. Upon defeat, this boss will drop 3,400 Runes, the Ash of War: Barricade Shield, and the Nightrider Flail weapon.

After reaching the Raya Lucaria Gate site of grace, ride northeast, toward Bellum Church, and you will encounter this Night’s Cavalry among the ruins, patrolling the road. Another glaive-wielding rider, this foe can easily get caught on the ruins and debris around the battle area, making some of his movements unpredictable. This also makes him susceptible to ranged sorceries.

Once slain, he will provide 5,600 Runes, the Ash of War: Giant Hunt, and the Nightrider Glaive weapon.

Item Drops

Ash of War: Phantom Slash

After reaching the Forbidden Lands and resting at the site of grace, follow the narrow path northeast. You will encounter the Night’s Cavalry before you reach the point where you’ll need to leap over gaps in the road. This enemy can be tough due to the lower visibility in the Forbidden Lands, so be on your guard.

This foe wields the Nightrider Glaive, and upon defeat, he will drop 36,000 Runes and the Ash of War: Phantom Slash.

Ninth & Tenth Night’s Cavalry: Consecrated Snowfield

Elden Ring ninth & tenth night's cavalry location map

Runes

84000

Item Drops

  • Night's Cavalry armor set
  • Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone

After you gain access to the Consecrated Snowfield and run through the blizzard, you’ll arrive at the Inner Consecrated Snowfield site of grace. From here, turn west to spot a caravan procession heading northward. This caravan is guarded not only by the usual warriors following in its wake but also by two Night’s Cavalry — one wielding the Nightrider Flail, and one wielding the Nightrider Glaive.

To take them on one at a time, ride up until you see the Night’s Cavalry turn toward you. He will not attack immediately, but will instead slowly head toward you before becoming aggressive.

  • Make sure to pull him further away from the caravan to avoid aggroing any other enemies or the other Night’s Cavalry.
  • Make sure to avoid the lightning balls that hover nearby. If you stray too close, they will begin sending out bolts of lightning that can quickly take you down.
Elden Ring two Night's Cavalry charging the Tarnished

The two Night’s Cavalry here are the most difficult you’ve yet faced, but upon defeating them both, you will receive 84,000 Runes, the Night’s Cavalry armor set, and one of the exceedingly rare Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
