White Mask Varre is the first NPC players will encounter in Elden Ring and can initially be found near The First Step Site of Grace. The NPC gives players a brief rundown of what to expect in the Lands Between while pointing them in the direction of Stormveil Castle where they can face off against the game’s first major boss, Godrick the Grafted.

At some point after that encounter, White Mask Varre leaves The First Step, however, he can be encountered again at various points throughout the game. White Mask Varre’s questline can be a bit intimidating to some since it (normally) involves some PvP, but completing it is definitely worth your time because it rewards you with a couple of neat items.

Invader Of Worlds

White Mask Varre will stick around The First Step until you speak to Enia in Roundtable Hold. Normally, you would have to defeat Godrick to progress past Stormveil Castle and unlock Roundtable Hold, however, it’s possible to skip that part if you’re in a hurry to meet the NPC again. Simply bypass the castle and rest at any Site of Grace outside Limgrave to have Melina transport you to Roundtable Hold.

After talking to Enia, you can find White Mask Varre in front of Rose Church, which is located on a small island just south of the Raya Lucaria Academy. Speak with him at Rose Church and tell him that the people you met at Roundtable Hold “didn’t seem right.” The NPC will be delighted by the response and will give you some Festering Bloody Fingers as a reward.

To progress to the next stage of the quest, you’ll need to use the Festering Bloody Fingers to invade other players three times. It doesn’t matter whether you defeat them or not. In fact, you don’t even have to fight them at all because you can use a Festering Bloody Finger and then immediately return to your own world with the Finger Severer and it will still count.

If you’re playing offline or don’t feel like invading other players, you can instead simply invade an NPC three times. Magnus the Beast Claw at Writheblood Ruins in Altus Plateau would be a good target. Just make sure not to kill him on your first invasion because you’ll need to expend three Festering Bloody Fingers to progress White Mask Varre’s questline.

Blood Of The Maiden

Blood of a maiden for White Mask Varre

Once you have completed the task, return to White Mask Varre at Rose Church and he will ask you to join his order. Accept and you will receive a piece of white cloth known as the Lord of Blood’s Favor along with instructions to soak it in the blood of a maiden. White Mask Varre mentions that the ritual normally involves killing one’s own maiden and then reminds you once again that you are maidenless, so you’ll need to find a Finger Maiden somewhere else.

There are a couple of viable candidates scattered across the Lands Between and it’s going to be up to you to decide whose blood you want to collect. The most obvious choice would be the dead maiden located at the Church of Inhibition in northeastern Liurnia. Another dead maiden can be found inside the Chapel of Anticipation on the island west of Castle Stormveil. However, this island is only accessible via a waygate found at The Four Belfries, and you’ll need to defeat a boss in order to get inside the chapel.

Lastly, there’s Irina, a maiden that can be found sitting on a rock south of the Bridge of Sacrifice in the Weeping Peninsula. Unfortunately, you’ll need to kill her to get her blood. Toward the end of Irina's questline the maiden dies, but for some inexplicable reason, you won’t be able to use her blood once she’s dead.

The Mohgwyn Dynasty

White Mask Varre Mohgwyn Palace

Regardless of how you managed to get the Lord of Blood’s Favor soaked in maiden blood, return with the item to White Mask Varre to progress the quest. The NPC will formally induct you into his order as a knight and give you a Bloody Finger as a sign that you now have the Lord of Blood’s favor. Speak with him again, and he will give you another gift – the Pureblood Knight’s Medal. This item teleports you to an underground area known as Mohgwyn’s Palace.

White Mask Varre tells you not to use the item just yet – and indeed, Mohgwyn’s Palace becomes accessible through other means later on after clearing Lyndell – but, of course, you’ll want to activate the medal right away. Once you arrive at Mohgwyn’s Palace want to make your way up the stairs past the hordes of enemies until you reach the mausoleum. Proceed with care through the mausoleum because you will be ambushed by a handful of strong enemies.

Shortly before reaching the mausoleum’s exit, you’ll stumble upon a red invasion sign on the floor. Make sure to activate the nearby Site of Grace before going on, just in case. As soon as you’re ready, invade White Mask Varre’s world and defeat him. You’ll be rewarded with a Furcalling Finger Remedy and a Rune Arc for doing so.

Once you’re back in your own world go back to where you found the invasion sign, and you’ll find White Mask Varre on the ground praying to his lord for salvation. Unfortunately for him, there will be no salvation as the NPC dies moments later. Looting his corpse will net you six Festering Bloody Fingers along with Varrre’s Bouquet, an Arcane scaling hammer.
