Elite: Dangerous Studio Frontier Developments Announces Coaster Park Tycoon

January 26, 2015

Frontier Developments, the studio behind the recently released space flight simulator Elite: Dangerous, has announced that is is developing a new game title Coaster Park Tycoon.

The British development studio developed arguably the most famous Tycoon game, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, in the early 2000s under Atari. While Frontier Developments is presently developing a roller coaster game named Screamride to be published by Microsoft Studios for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, their desire to create another self-published title has lead them to create Coaster Park Tycoon.

In a post on the studio’s official forums, Executive Producer Michael Brookes provided a quote from CCO Jonny Watts from Frontier Developments’ operations update press release:

Coaster Park games appeal to a great many people, as proven by RollerCoaster Tycoon 3. It is a field for which Frontier has unparalleled expertise and immense passion, and one to which we have long wanted to make a ‘no-holds-barred’ return. We want Coaster Park Tycoon to be another major step forward for the simulation genre, and sit alongside Elite: Dangerous as a second major self-published franchise.

A new roller coaster game “intended to raise that benchmark for ‘Tycoon’ gameplay” should be excellent news to longtime fans. Personally, I haven’t played a Tycoon game since Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, so hearing a successor of sorts is coming has me quite excited.
