Elon Musk: “Twitter is the Dark Souls of Social Media”
SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk makes a seemingly wise, definitely confusing Dark Souls comparison to end all Dark Souls comparisons.
It’s not just games journalists that compare everything to Dark Souls. Over the weekend Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, took to Twitter to offer the seemingly prophetic, yet ultimately confusing adage, “Twitter is Dark Souls of social media. Reddit is Bloodborne. Insta is Zelda.”
Twitter is Dark Souls of social media. Reddit is Bloodborne. Insta is Zelda.

Let’s try to get through this one together. On the off chance that you’ve been living under a rock, comparing any game that’s slightly difficult to Dark Souls, the challenging action-RPG from FromSoftware, has become a meme in recent years. If you’d like to see a curation of these hot-takes, the Twitter account xmeetsdarksouls has you covered. Having joined Twitter back in 2014, xmeetsdarksouls’ Twitter feed highlights far-reaching, forced, and often superfluous Souls comparisons.

In this regard, Musk is implying that Twitter is the most difficult social media platform. Seeing as the Tesla CEO recently got in a fair bit of trouble regarding some of his tweets (which ultimately caused him to resign as Tesla’s chairperson) this definitely tracks. That being said, it’s hard to follow the rest of Musk’s statement. Bloodborne, another challenging action-RPG from FromSoftware, is similar to Souls, however, is set in the Victorian era. Is Musk implying that Reddit is just as difficult as Twitter in a different way? Also, is he referring to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or an older Zelda game? How exactly is the Zelda franchise similar to Instagram? Am I reading entirely too much into this?
Musk’s Souls’ comparison isn’t the first time the CEO tweeted about video games in recent memory. Earlier last week, Musk shared an image of a fake headline that read “Elon Musk buys Fortnite and deletes it.” This caused the official Fortnite Twitter account to fire back at Musk with a tweet poking fun at the lengthy projected construction time for SpaceX’s first Mars base. “A whole decade, @elonmusk? Just build, LOL!” the Fortnite Twitter account replied.

Additionally, in other gaming news, Musk confirmed leaderboards for Tesla’s built-in Atari games. Starting with Tesla’s 9.0 vehicle software update, Tesla’s fleet of vehicles have been able to play classic Atari games like Missile Command, Lunar Lander, and Centipede. Now, according to Musk, players will soon be able to compete with one another via a Tesla-wide leaderboard.

While we may never know the intended message of Musk’s Souls comparison, we can safely say that deciphering Musk’s tweet truly was the Dark Souls of deciphering tweets.
