Estimated Total Revenue of Minecraft Thus Far? Surprisingly Low...

By Allen Park

…if you’re a greedy little snake that considers $33 million “low”, that is. That’s the total number that Gamasutra settled on yesterday when the creator of Minecraft, Markus “Notch” Persson, answered a question on Reddit regarding total number of sales so far. A simple bit of multiplication, and the total came out to $33 million, spread out across a little over 1.8 million subscribers.

When you consider how small the team truly is, how little the overhead is compared to bigger studios, and the simple fact that the actual game still hasn’t come out yet, those numbers sound ludicrous. Still, it’s a testament to the big changes that are happening in our gaming climate today; you have to wonder if EA and Activision are looking at Mojang and wondering how the hell they can get in on that.

Allen is an utter whore of a gamer; he's completely open-minded to all games, be they AAA blockbusters or $5 casual children's games. His focus is on indie games specifically, valuing gameplay and ingenuity over sparkly visuals and ridiculous gimmicks. When he's not geeking out over the newest art game, he's out toning his sexy, sculpted shoulders while surfing epic 1.5ft waves, or having a good time with local, high-gravity microbrews.
