Everspace 2 Ditches the Roguelike Formula to Be an Open World Space Shooter

Everspace 2 is coming to KickStarter next month, Steam Early Access in 2020, and finally PS4 and Xbox One in 2021.

Rockfish Games’ Everspace was one of the best roguelikes and space shooters of this generation. Fortunately, the developer revealed that the plan on following that first game up with a sequel, aptly named Everspace 2, in the coming years. Everspace 2 will be getting a Kickstarter campaign attempting to raise €450,000 on September 6 and is poised to come to Steam Early Access in late 2020 before getting a full release for PC, PS4, and Xbox One once 2021 comes around. You can get a taste of what to expect with the game’s reveal trailer below.

While Everspace is known for being a solid roguelike, Rockfish Games wants to double down on the solid space shooters and RPG elements with this sequel. That means Everspace 2 is not a roguelike, but “is an open world space shooter with classic RPG elements and persistent player progression, as well as many more player ships and significantly enhanced storytelling.” As a fan of all of these elements in the original, I can’t wait to see how the developers expand on them.

Rockfish Games CEO Micheal Schade is optimistic about this change as well, saying “many of our fans and space game enthusiasts were still longing for an open world space shooter with  RPG elements in the Everspace universe.” That being said, he still reiterated that Everspace 2 will still be “a beautiful fantastic sci-fi world paired with uncompromising space action that gets down to business right away.”

Those of you interested in Everspace 2 will be able to already get your hands on an early playable build at Gamescom this week, PAX West from August 29 to September 2, and TwitchCon between September 27 and September 29. Everspace 2’s Kickstarter campaign will already be in full swing during TwitchCon, with Rockfish Games choosing to crowdfund this sequel because it will ensure both that the community is heavily involved and that the studio can maintain financial and creative independence. Even though we don’t know about many games coming in 2021 yet, Everspace 2 has already hopped to the the top of my most anticipated game list.

You can see the first beautiful screenshots for this game below. Everspace 2 will be coming to Steam Early Access in 2020 before hitting PS4 and Xbox One in 2021. Unfortunately, no Nintendo Switch version of the game has been announced at this time.
