EVO, the world's largest fighting game tournament in the world, is scheduled to make their selection of games on January 24th. The competition for spots can get heated with new and old titles filling the 8ish spots. NetherRealm Studios scored their first EVO spot with Mortal Kombat 9 in 2011 and found similar success with the sequel and Injustice: Gods Among Us.

However, NRS has had difficulty having lasting games with the worldwide tournament's history. Capcom, Microsoft, and Nintendo have all had spots taken year after year by their fighting game franchises whereas the MK and Injustice series sees high turnover with each new iteration. However, MKXL has been heavily supported since the 2015 release with the last major update released back in October; This meant that the game had a better chance of making it into the EVO 2017 selections.

But the head of the Vegas bound tournament, Joey Cuellar, sent out a post polling his followers based on NRS' fighters. The tweet asked if people would prefer Injustice 2 or MKXL for the next EVO. The Super Heroes won out in this case with 59% of the vote of over 2700 clicks. With the recent announcement that Injustice 2 will be coming out on May 16th, it's more likely that the brand new game will make the cut.

It shouldn't be overlooked that MKXL still has its fans and managed to get more than a 40-60 split of this vote. I honestly hope that both games make the cut to reward NRS' repeated attempts to make their titles tournament savvy. But we'll know soon enough once the selections are made on the 24th of this month. We'll be here to update you once those games are announced.
