Far Cry 5 Tops PS4 Digital Sales Chart in Japan, Sells Over 90% of Initial Shipment at Retail

Far Cry 5 is the latest Ubisoft game and open world franchise to do very well in Japan, both at retail and on the digital marketplace.

April 8, 2018

Far Cry 5 has been rather successful in its debut week Japan, as showcased by the latest Media Create charts. Yet, today we get more information about its performance, and it’s certainly positive.

Media Create posted its weekly analysis, mentioning that the game sold over 90% of its initial shipment to retail stores. This means that its 75,474 copies created a near-sellout situation. According to the firm, this is a sign of a good start.

As a matter of fact, this may have resulted in many potential customers not finding the game at retail, shifting their purchase to digital. In fact, this seems to be confirmed by the latest PS4 digital sales chart released by Sony about the period between March 26th to April 1st. You can see it below.

  1. Far Cry 5
  2. Super Robot Wars X
  3. What Remains of Edith Finch
  4. Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
  5. Undertale
  6. Battlefield 1 Revolution
  7. Valkyria Chronicles 4
  8. Monster Hunter World
  9. Far Cry 4
  10. Minecraft PlayStation 4 Edition
  11. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster
  12. Battleborn
  13. The Evil Within
  14. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
  15. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year Edition
  16. MLB The Show 18
  17. Final Fantasy IX
  18. Rainbow Six Siege: Advanced Edition
  19. Shining Resonance Refrain
  20. Tom Clancy’s The Division

As you can see, Far Cry 5 was a the top, leaving behind Super Robot War X, which instead ranked first at retail. As a matter of fact, its momentum even fragged Far Cry 4 back into the top-ten.

It’s worth mentioning that Ubisoft is one of the western publishers that pushes its games very well in Japan, with considerable marketing effort, while open-world games tend to be rather popular in the country.

Another interesting (but unfortunate) piece of data is the absolute flop on the digital marketplace of Shining Resonance Refrain, which serves once more as a testament of the fact that Japanese gamers really can’t care the less about most remasters.

If you want to take a look at some of the reasons that may have helped Far Cry 5 sell very well, you can check out our review, and the recent accolade trailer.

The game is currently available, and you can grab it on PC, PS4, or Xbox One via Amazon.
