A new report from Insider Gaming indicates that Ubisoft is currently developing Far Cry 7, which reportedly began weeks after the release of Far Cry 6. The unverified report also mentions a standalone Far Cry multiplayer project, which was supposedly attached to Far Cry 7 before becoming a separate entity.

Insider Gaming claims to have two sources that provide a glimpse of where the franchise might be headed. It notes that the ongoing project was started by producer Dan Hay, who has since left the publisher for Activision-Blizzard. According to reports, Hay based the Far Cry 7 project on fans' feedback from Ubisoft's survey in 2015 about a possible Far Cry set in Alaska wilderness. The positive reviews prompted Ubisoft to consider the setting in Far Cry 7, exposing players to the dreaded harsh Alaska conditions.

In addition to the Alaskan wilderness, Ubisoft's 2015 franchise survey also mentioned themes like a futuristic sci-fi setting on a different planet, and a zombie outbreak, all of which have manifested in previous seasons. However, we're yet to see themes like the dinosaur park and the wild west, also mentioned in the survey. It's unknown whether or not Ubisoft intends to include them in upcoming expansions, DLCs, or updates.

However, after Dan left Ubisoft, Insider Gaming reports that the project was split into two; a single-player project codenamed 'blackbird', and a multiplayer project codenamed 'maverick'. Not much was relayed regarding blackbird, but the rumors suggest it'll take place in Alaska. Maverick is said to be an extraction shooter like Escape from Tarkov and comes with a loot chest, backpack system, contracts, permadeath, and more.

With the recent delays of Skull and Bones, it's doubtful that Far Cry 7 will be announced anytime soon. Insider Gaming slated the two projects for 2025 release, but we recommend taking that news with a pinch of salt until Ubisoft confirms the existence of both titles.

Either way, fans would be thrilled by a Far Cry set in the wilderness battling the dangerous wildlife, zombies, or unfavorable weather across Alaska terrains. However, until we hear the news from the horse's mouth, news on Far Cry 7 development remains pure speculation.
