FIFA 18 Coming September 29, 2017; Switch Version Uses Old Game Engine and Doesn’t Feature The Journey Mode
EA's FIFA 18 arrives on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, PS3, and Xbox 360 on August 29th.
As it announced it would yesterday, today, EA unveiled FIFA 18 and its cover star — and recent Champions League winner — Christiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid to the world.
The reveal comes in the form of an announcement cinematic trailer that centers around the superstar going up against recent Premier League winners Chelsea.
As standard, the game will launch on September 29, 2017 on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and now also the Switch. The Switch version was rumored to be a different version of the game; but EA has confirmed this isn’t the case. However, the Switch version will notably not run on the Frostbite engine, which was introduced with last year’s installment for PC and current-gen consoles. Additionally, last year’s debut mode — The Journey — which is poised to return as “The Journey: Hunter Returns,” will not be available on the Switch version as well.
Notably, FIFA 18 will be ditching Legends (retired players who appeared in FIFA Ultimate Team) in favor of multiplatform “Icons.” According to EA, Icons will be available on all platforms, with the first being Brazilian legend and forward Ronaldo. More FUT Icons will be revealed over the summer according to the developer/publisher.
The game will be available across three editions: the Standard Edition, the Ronaldo Edition, and ICON Edition. The Ronaldo Edition comes with a three day early access to the game, meanwhile the ICON Edition comes with some additional FUT goodies in the form of loan players, as well as the three day early access period.
If you pre-order any of the three editions you will receive Christiano Ronaldo on loan in FUT, 8 special edition FUT kits, and up to (depending on which edition you pre-order) $60 worth of Jumbo Premium Gold FUT packs.
Additionally, if you’re an EA Access or Origin Access member you will be able play up to 10 hours of the game early, starting Thursday September 21st.
Below, you can check out the game’s debut trailer and screenshots while you wait for the full-reveal on June 10th at EA Play.
