In previous years it started with just Manager career mode, then you had the option to just do a Pro Player career where you controlled the player. They have now introduced a mode where you can create your own Football Club and control them in career mode. If you are interested in the different modes and their features, then read on below.

Manager Mode

FIFA 23 Create New Manager Screen

For Manager Mode this mode has been around a while and has not changed much over the years. However, for this iteration of FIFA, they have made some changes to help the feel of the mode be more realistic. This mode gives you the ability to become the manager of a current team of your choice, you can choose to create your own Manager character or to choose a current manager to control.

As a manager, you will have control over the squad and who plays or doesn't, you will also be in charge of any players in and players out with transfers. With the manager mode, you are also in charge of keeping players happy, you need to make sure morale is up and contracts are dealt with. If you fail to keep players happy, then they can put in transfer requests and be sold, so make sure to keep everyone you want happy.

Player Mode

FIFA 23 Create New Player Screen

In Player Mode, you do not have any of the hassles of managing a whole team. For this, you can create your player, or choose an existing one and then try your hand at being a Pro Player. You can choose any position, including Goalkeeper and you get to build up the attributes of your player. You will need to perform and meet targets outlined by your manager to give you the best chance at making it into the starting eleven.

For this mode, you can choose to control the whole team, or you can control only your player. If you want a more immersive feel, then playing as your player only is best, you also will then only play the parts of the games where your player is on the pitch. So if your player is on the bench or subbed off you can skip those parts to just play the game. Initially, you may find you are not in the team, so you can quick sim these matches. Once you have played through player mode and got your player to the tippy top of world football, you can then choose to retire and go straight into management with your player.

Create Your Team

FIFA 23 Create Your Club Screen

This mode is a new mode added for this year in Manager Mode, it gives you the option to create a whole new team. Instead of the usual picking a team to manage you get to make a team and name it how you like (Within Reason) and also create the emblem and kit for the team too. Then you pick a league you would like to play in and how good you want the team to be, you will then have to choose a team to replace in the chosen league so make sure you do not choose a team you like as they will be gone. Then you can play the mode as you would in Manager Mode but take your own team to the top.

New Feature Breakdown In Career Modes

FIFA 23 Career Mode Main Menu

Across the Career modes in FIFA 23 they have introduced a few new features for players to get a more realistic feel when playing the game. There is some quality of life changes but also some cool changes that help the game to feel more realistic. It has always been a big thing for EA each year to try and make the game feel better and more immersive for you, and with this year's FIFA that is no different. Although there are no huge differences each year, they do try to listen to their players and make upgrades each year to get it right. As a video game, it will never be perfect or fully realistic, as different barriers prevent this, but they are getting closer with each FIFA release. The main changes to career modes are listed below:

  • Playable Highlights, this lets you only play the parts of a game that would influence the game. This has been put in to bridge the gap between playing a whole 90 minutes and using the Quick Sim.
  • The usual Main Menu clean-up has been done, making it easier to locate things from player contracts to Youth Team stars
  • New cinematics have been added in called Dynamic Moments. So if you sign a new player or sell a player, then there will be a cinematic of them coming to the training ground, meeting you and other players, and completing the medical.
  • They have made some changes to the pre-season tournament, so you have eight teams playing three matches each. Only the winner of the whole thing takes the prize money, and the matches are closer to the start of the season.
  • In Manager mode you usually create your Manager, but you now can take control of current managers like Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp. You can choose to stay with their current time or to take charge of a different one.
  • Transfer analysis has been added to help improve your Negotiation skills. Once you have sold or bought a player your overall transfer will be rated, on whether you got the best price you could and if it was affordable for your club.
  • For Player Mode they have added a new Personality System. This allows you to build up the Personality of your player to whatever you choose. Anything you do on the pitch can have an impact as well as stuff off the pitch. This then all builds up to a personality for your player which gives you certain benefits. Maverick, Virtuoso, and Heartbeat are the three Personalities to choose from and each comes with its own benefits. Maverick is someone who is a more individual player who is rewarded for taking on players and shooting more often. Virtuoso are the more skillful player trying more skills and taking players on which you are rewarded for in a match. Then Heartbeat is the overall team player who does everything for the team, so you will be rewarded more for passing and assisting in the game.
  • Finally, they have improved the Tactics of AI. This means the AI are more adaptive to scenarios in game, so should you be leading a game, then the AI team will make more attacking changes and a more attacking formation. The opposite should they be winning, they can sit deep and soak up your attacks.
