Warning: This article contains mild spoilers for Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Final Fantasy VII Remake has been out for almost a week now and we are already getting behind the scenes information regarding story choices as well as combat. In an interview posted through Square Enix, Co-Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Producer Yoshinori Kitase talk about their reasonings behind making some arguably bold changes for the remake of such a beloved game.

The first big question that was on a lot of returning fan's minds was the presence of Sephiroth. For those unfamiliar with the villain, Sephiroth doesn't show up in the original until after the Midgar portion so bringing him into the story so early was a big surprise.

"...the way we handled Sephiroth in the original FINAL FANTASY VII was to hide him - hold him back," said Kitase. You may not know this, but I was inspired by the movie Jaws which took a similar approach of teasing this powerful presence, but never fully showing you the shark until later in the story. We wanted to build him up as this really big, powerful character in people’s minds. By only referring to him indirectly, it created this feeling of fear and oppression - so when he makes his first appearance, it’s a big deal. But for the remake, that doesn’t work so well - partly because everybody knows who Sephiroth is (laughs)! We didn’t think it would be as effective to have him held back until later on in the story."

After finishing the game myself, bringing in Sephiroth from the get-go was definitely the right move because (without getting into spoilers) this new Final Fantasy VII Remake project isn't going to be just a retelling of the original story. We can expect new things to occur as we move to part 2 and beyond. While there are those who may feel differently in wanting the same story told in a fresh set of paint, I think it will be a more exciting experience for both new and old players with having all cards on the table.

Final Fantasy VII is now available exclusively on PS4.
