In an interview with Famitsu, Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura spoke more about <ateria and what players can expect of it in the game. This interview coincides with the "controversy" regarding Tifa and Aerith's character models. During Square Enix's E3 showcase, it was confirmed that Materia was going to be a part of the game. However, according to Nomura, you won't have access to all the same Materia that were available in the original.

For those that don't know, Materia, in short, is an energy source that allows people to cast magic and summons among other things in the world of Final Fantasy VII. The Materia will be utilized the same as in the original, however, with the combat system being different this time around, there will be Materia from the old game that will not be in the remake.

While that will potentially upset some fans, Nomura has assured there will also be new Materia as well. It was also reconfirmed that Materia will show off on the characters when they are equipped to them. This was shown off during the game's presentation with Cloud having a green Materia orb equipped to his Buster Sword.

From what we saw of the game at E3 a few weeks ago the game seems to be promising with a vast world to explore as well as a new combat system that still feels like Final Fantasy VII. You can pre-order the Deluxe or Standard edition of Final Fantasy VII Remake on Amazon. The game is set to release on March 3, 2020.
