Final Fantasy X-3 - FF Writer Reiterates The Sequel Can Happen - Famitsu Interview Translated
FFX-3 could happen after FF7R
Final Fantasy X-3 could happen one day according to a new Famitsu interview with the core FF staff at Square Enix.
This week’s issue of Famitsu Magazine (officially titled the July 29-August 5 2021 issue) includes 30 pages on Final Fantasy 10 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the PS2 JRPG. These pages most notably include an interview with the key developers of the series, including Tetsuya Nomura and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima.

Final Fantasy X-3 – FF scenarist already wrote the story
In the Famitsu magazine interview, Tetsuya Nomura mentioned that if FFX-3 ever happens, Kazushige Nojima actually already wrote a rough draft for the story. He mentioned how they thought about planning a sequel when making Final Fantasy X Will and Final Fantasy X-2.5 Eien no Daisho. For now FFX-3 is a dormant project though.
Nomura also pointed out for fans who haven’t realized it yet that you can see older versions of Tidus and Yuna in the audio drama.
Lastly, Final Fantasy VII Remake co-director Motomu Toriyama stated that if Final Fantasy X-3 happens one day, it won’t be before they’re done with the Final Fantasy VII Remake project.
In 2013, Nojima already mentioned he’d like to make FFX-3 one day. See the tweet below.

Final Fantasy X-2.5, FFX Will explained
Final Fantasy X-2.5 Eien no Daisho (The price of Eternity) is a novel written by Kazushige Nojima and released in Japan on the same day as Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, on December 26, 2013. You can find its cover below:
Final Fantasy X Will is a voice drama included in Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster. It’s the sequel to X-2.5. It features two childhood friends: Chuami, the self-proclaimed daughter of Auron, and Kurgum, a young boy and a Sender who admires Yuna and her Guardians.
As pointed out by our peers at Game’s Talk, illustrations by Tetsuya Nomura from the audio drama were exhibited at the event FF 30th Anniversary Exhibition in 2018. You can see Tidus, Yuna, Chuami, and Kurgum.
Keep in mind all of this is from the usual Famitsu magazine leaks, who more often than not lack a lot of details. If time permits I will update this article with more details from the interview. After Famitsu magazine gets officially released digitally July 15 midnight JST.
This isn’t the first time Square Enix hints at an older Final Fantasy getting a new game. In another interview I translated, Kazushige Nojima also shared several thoughts on the scenario of FF7, FF8 and a possible new FF8 game.

Final Fantasy X was also voted as the best Final Fantasy game during the 2020 fan poll organized by NHK. Square Enix could definitely make another sequel to ride on its popularity. What do you think of a possible FFX-3? You can always hit me up on Twitter @A_iyane07 for a chat.
