Today Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy XIV passed 14 million registered players.
It’s worth mentioning that the fourteen million number is marked as including trial accounts, but it’s still a rather flattering milestone for a game basically born from an unmitigated disaster. We can certainly say that the team led by Naoki Yoshida pulled a miracle which is completely unique in the MMORPG market.
The announcement comes on the fifth anniversary of the game’s release, which happened on August 27th. We’re actually coming close to the 8th anniversary of the original release (on September 30th), but of course, no one’s very eager to talk about that. That being said, I have fond memories in 1.0 as well, so I do.
The announcement included a message from Yoshida-san himself.
“Although the original FINAL FANTASY XIV failed to meet expectations, through the support of people in the media, the companies we have worked with, and of course our dedicated players, we were able to launch A Realm Reborn in 2013. FFXIV was indeed reborn, and over the course of these past five years, it has grown to become the title that we all know and love today. I cannot thank you enough.
We in the development and operations teams have been working at full capacity ever since the launch of A Realm Reborn, and while we have made our share of missteps along the way, the Warriors of Light continue to spur us onward.
There are many new gaming experiences and epic tales that we wish to share with you all. We will be working harder than ever to expand the world of FFXIV, where players form lasting bonds with one another through their adventures.
FINAL FANTASY XIV is the result of everyone’s passion and commitment, including all of you Warriors of Light, and I hope you will continue to support us as we build this world together.”
I’m not too sure I’d talk about support of people in the media since at some point I’m pretty sure DualShockers was the only (or one of very, very few) non-fansite that was still talking about Final Fantasy XIV before Square Enix announced A Realm Reborn. Here we have been covering the game before it was cool, and I’m quite proud of it.
Yet, I’m digressing… This is certainly a time to celebrate for everyone who loves Square Enix’s Final Fantasy MMORPG.
