Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Gets an Official Lore Forum, and it’s Simply Fantastic
If there’s one thing I always unconditionally loved about Final Fantasy XIV it’s the deep and complex lore behind the game, even in ways that aren’t easily noticeable at first sight. There are so many layers of legends and information that it’s honestly tricky to keep track of them all.
Today Square Enix did something that every MMORPG developer should do: they opened a “Lore” subsection of the official FFXIV forums that not only allows players to discuss the backstory of the game, but in which members of the team and of the localization staff, with the charge led by Localization Team Lead Michael-Christopher Koji Fox (that forum dwellers know as “Fernehalwes”), are going to share their notes and information about little known facts and facets of the Eorzean culture.
The first day already brought something definitely juicy, with the naming conventions for all the playable races included in the game. So if you’re going to create a Hyur, Lalafell, Elzen, Roegadyn or Miqo’te you may want to head over to the relevant link and start crafting yourself a good and lore-friendly name. On top of it all we also get a handy Roegadyn dictionary.
According to Fernehalwes himself there’s a lot more to come.
Again, this is something every MMORPG developer should seriously consider doing. It’s going to be a fantastic boon not only for roleplayers, but even for those that want to immerse themselves a little more in the atmosphere of the game’s world.
By the way, if you’re interested in the lore behind Final Fantasy XIV: a Realm Reborn and you didn’t play Final Fantasy XIV, you may want to check out my The Story So Far series or articles for a complete recap of the story and all the relevant cutscenes. It should definitely help in getting up to speed with what happened in the first game in preparation for the upcoming sequel/remake.
