Final Fantasy XIV PS4 Version: Full Open Beta Access and PS3/PS4 Upgrade Details; New Screenshots

Square Enix released today detailed information on how to access the open beta of the PS4 version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. In addition to that we also learn exactly how we’ll be able to upgrade our PS3 accounts to Sony’s new console for free.

The beta will be completely open to everyone that owns a PS4 and does not require a pre-registration. In order to participate you’ll have to follow the steps below:

  1. Proceed to the PlayStation Store and download FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn (PlayStation 4 Beta Version). Once the download is complete, installation will begin automatically.
  2. Start FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn (PlayStation 4 Beta Version) from the home screen.
  3. Log in using your Square Enix account and follow the on-screen instructions to start the game.

Of course if you don’t have a Square Enix account you’ll need to create one. My suggestion is to do it immediately (you can find the form here), or at least not at the very last moment, as the account management servers might be affected by heavy traffic on February 22nd.

The beta will be split in two relatively short phases:

  • Phase 1: From Saturday, February 22, 2014 (JST) to Monday, March 3, 2014 (JST).
  • Phase 2: From Friday, April 4, 2014 (JST) to Monday, April 7, 2014 (JST).

After logging into the game for the first time participants will also be enabled to post in a beta forum to report bugs and offer feedback.

Interestingly enough, all the progression acquired during the second phase of the beta will be retained at launch, while progression made during the first phase will be deleted at the beginning of the second.

In addition to that, during phase 1 everyone will have to create new characters, while phase 2 will include the option to use existing characters from the PC and PS3 versions.

Players that have already purchased the PS3 version of the game don’t need to purchase the PS4 port, unless they want to play on both consoles, as the upgrade is one-way only. Once you have done the upgrade, you cannot go back to the PS3 version. Those that have a collector’s edition for either PS3 or PC will also receive the digital bonuses for the PS4 collector’s edition for free.

The transfer website will be available on April 11th. The same date also marks the beginning of the early access before release granted to those that will pre-order. PS3 owners will have to wait an unspecified  processing time after completing the free procedure before being able to access the PS4 version, but after that they’ll be able to participate to the early access even if they didn’t pre-order.

In addition to the information above Square Enix also released a new batch of screenshots, that you can enjoy below.
