Publisher Square Enix announced today via press release that Final Fantasy XV, the latest title in the long-running franchise, has shipped five million copies globally in its first day on the shelves, becoming the fastest selling title in the Final Fantasy series.

The sales number for the game, which launched worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Tuesday, November 29th, includes sales of both physical and digital copies.

The game had the highest recorded first-day digital copies sold in Japan. In surrounding Asian countries, it also had the highest recorded amount of physical copies shipped and digital copies sold.

“Receiving critical acclaim from fans across the world for its beautiful world design and graphical quality, combined with open-world freedom and an exciting new battle system, the game is the first in the series’ history to have a simultaneous global launch. SQUARE ENIX will continue to work on projects to expand and enhance customer enjoyment of FINAL FANTASY XV, releasing additional content and associated series products.”

Media Create charts related to this week will be released on December 7th, but we already had early reports from local store managers that have been writing about the performance of the game in their shops.

Gamers in Tokyo have been lining up early in the morning in front of the Yodobashi Camera megastore in Akihabara to purchase the game on launch day and winess a launch event organized by Square Enix, and similar event have been hosted across the world.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how the game will perform in the long run, but so far, so good.
