Final Fantasy XVI Revealed By Square Enix On PS5 Showcase

Square Enix officially announced Final Fantasy XVI on PS5 during the next gen console's showcase. It' s a PS5 timed exclusive and should be coming to PC later on.

Square Enix has officially revealed Final Fantasy XVI at the PlayStation 5 showcase on September 16. The showcase included the very first trailer for Final Fantasy XVI, and revealed it’s a timed PS5 exclusive. The game is full of action, and it’s confirmed this is the game Naoki Yoshida mentioned he was leading at Square Enix’s 3rd Development Division: an AAA game which was then entering full-scale development. It was rumored to be an action game judging from job listings, and it’s confirmed now this game was Final Fantasy 16.

It’s also important to note the beginning of the trailer specified “all footage was captured on PC emulating the PS5 experience”. The end of the trailer also specified the game will be coming to PC once the PS5 timed exclusivity ends.

Final Fantasy XVI has been rumored for multiple months by now. In particular, a Twitter account that could have been a placeholder for the game’s official Twitter account was reportedly found in August 2020. The game was already rumored to be timed PS5 exclusive. Lastly, soon after the announcement of the PS5 showcase, the event’s announcement tweet was also shared by Shinji Hashimoto, which added fuel to the fire.

Square Enix already announced a PS5 game, handled by Luminous Productions this time, and code-named Project Athia. You can read more about it here.

The latest numbered Final Fantasy title was FFXV, released in 2016, while the newest game overall is Final Fantasy VII Remake, available now on PS4. It’ll be interesting to see how Final Fantasy 16 will compare to its predecessors.
