The last of the Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z developer diary videos, aptly titled "The Style of Slaughter," talks about the reason behind the over-the-top gore and humor that defines the ninja/zombie mash-up.

According to the developers, including the legendary Keiji Inafune, an American comic style was chosen because they wanted to present the gore and humor in a way that would be interesting and "not too gross." Because of the choice of style, they had to take great care in order to ensure that each panel in the cutscenes had the proper amount of detail.
