First Reciever of Red 5 Studios’ Cosplay Sponsorship Chosen

Congratulations to Crystal Graziano for the opportunity any serious cosplayer would give just about anything for.

For the next year, Red 5 Studios will pay for all her costumes and cosplay-related activities (I am assuming convention badge fees, possibly hotel space?). In return, she has to wear the Morningstar costume from Red 5’s upcoming game Firefall, handcrafted by Steve Wang, an award-winning Hollywood FX artist, for upcoming events. Such a hardship, I know.

To clarify why this is such a big freaking deal: depending on the existence of limits in the contract, Red 5 is easily looking at several thousand dollars in reimbursement.

I’m a pretty good cosplayer, not to sound too egotistical, but I am nowhere near Crystal’s level. And I still spend in the $300- $800 range per costume, especially with video game costumes, which are more complex than most anime costumes by design. (Anime and manga must be hand-drawn in each panel, necessitating simplicity. Game costumes are rendered once, and can have as much detail as the design team wants with a relatively small amount of effort.) Add to that convention badges ($40-100 per event is a pretty good estimate) and potential hotel fees, and you’re looking at a large chunk of change.

The amount of time, money and effort that goes into truly fantastic game cosplays is ridiculous (but that’s a topic for another article). Anyway, Crystal has a fantastic opportunity here, and I guarantee you she knows it.

CEO of Red 5, Mark Kern, states about the program that

Because Firefall’s sci-fi world and story are so rich and colorful, we see there being a lot of interest from artists and designers. Developers should embrace these individuals because they add so much to the universe, both in-game and out. This program is our way of showing appreciation and support for what they contribute to the game and community.

Firefall is a free-to-play open world shooter from Red 5 Studios, which is currently in the first stage of the exclusive beta. To sign up for a chance to be included in the beta, check out Firefall‘s homepage.
