This Fleshy GameCube is the Stuff of Nightmares

Everyone loves a special edition console but this custom made GameCube seems to have escaped from the mind of Shinji Mikami.

The Nintendo GameCube is a console that is looked on incredibly fondly. Launching back on the 18th of November in 2001, it was beaten to market by the original Xbox by only three days in North America. Over the course of both life-cycles, only 2 million units separated them at the close of play, with Xbox ending up on top. Even so, the GameCube enjoyed years of favourable reviews and top tier titles including the likes of Metroid Prime and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.

It’s garnered something of a cult following. From backward compatibility support for the Wii to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate doubling down on GameCube controller nostalgia that reminded loyalists of the heady days of Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Just like the swathe of DS special editions that came after it, a healthy amount of premium GameCube consoles entered the market throughout the course of its lifespan. These either took the form of marketing cross-promotion tie-ins with popular games, like the Platinum Resident Evil 4 console, or region-locked special editions like the Spice Orange GameCube for the Japanese market.

Well, it seems all of those official attempts pale in comparison to the modding community. We thought we’d seen everything there was to see. From a Switch docking station made out of a GameCube to the GameCube Mini that Nintendo hasn’t got around to doing yet. We were wrong. Nothing could have prepared us for a fleshy GameCube.

Posted for sale on Mercari by user iv_art_, who has other custom consoles for sale such as a bloody SNES and a wooden GameBoy, the GoreCube is being sold for $92. As conversation pieces go, it’s honestly a steal. The description for the item reads:

Customized GameCube Horror & stitches. Made to look and feel like bruised skin. I like horror stuff a lot so I was inspired to make this. This is a shell replacement no hardware included. Just the shell art work. All hand made and hand painted. 1/1 and signed before shipping. Check out my other customized gaming consoles and customized figures.

I’m not sure whether I’m repulsed by the idea of a fleshy GameCube or impressed that the thought is a truly original one. Made out of what I can only hope is leather or an animal-friendly equivalent, it really does paint a creepy picture. Is this something you’d display with pride? I’m not sure I’d have the stomach for it.
