In a year one might argue is huge for video games, 2018 seemed to have quite a few surprises and game trailer reveals. From E3 bringing us the likes of The Elder Scrolls VI, Cyberpunk 2077, Beyond Good & Evil 2, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part 2, and much much more - you wouldn't expect a game that came out in 2017 to take the crown for most viewed video game trailer in 2018. Yep, Fortnite Battle Royale beat out all the competition to release the most viewed YouTube trailer for a game this year.

In less than six months, Fortnite Battle Royale's fifth season announcement trailer rolled in around 48.6 million views on YouTube. The figure is quite impressive for a game that received the Battle Royale mode all the way back in November 2017, with even more than just that one trailer making the list of most viewed game trailers. GamesIndustry.biz, which YouTube sent these figures to, also did its own calculations, pointing out that "five out of the top ten were from the official Fortnite channel."

In second and third place came two major releases this year; Fallout 76 and Red Dead Redemption 2. While one was critically acclaimed and another was thrown to the wolves, it doesn't mean that the trailers didn't intrigue potential buyers. In less than six months, Fallout 76's trailer brought in 33.8 million views, with Red Dead Redemption 2 hitting 27.9 million views.

The rest of the list provided includes, in the following order; Clash of Clans: Hammer Jam, Clash Royale: Clan Wars is Here, DOOM Eternal, Minecraft Aquatic Update, League of Legends: Just One More, GTA Online: After Hours, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout Reveal. Quite a varied list for such a jam-packed year. It's surprising that some games didn't make it onto this list, like Cyberpunk 2077's gameplay trailer, which amassed 12.1 million views.

Either way, it's unsurprising but similarly impressive that Fortnite gained the most views of all; it was the most popular game of the year and one of the most popular video games of all time. It's an astounding project, whether you dislike it or not. You cannot deny Fortnite is an absolute monster of a video game icon.
