Fumito Ueda on His Next Game: “I’m Creating Something Very Different”
Fumito Ueda offers up a slither of insight into his next project.
According to legendary game director Fumito Ueda — who you may know from games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian — his next game will be very different from his former projects, or at least he thinks it will be.
As you may know, Ueda-san has kept his cards close to his chest about whatever his next game is (as you would expect). Earlier this year however, he did reveal that after spending many years with The Last Guardian and it’s more linear formula, that he may go back to the Shadow of the Colossus-type, more open-world, environment for his next game.
However, beyond this, Ueda-san hasn’t divulged much else about what he’s got cooking. But recently, speaking to Eurogamer, he did offer up more slithers of information about the project.
First off, unlike his past works, he will not initiate development off with a powerful visual stimulus similar to a short film and build from there: rather, for the first time, he intends to make a prototype. According to Eurogamer, thanks to modern tools, Ueda-san won’t have to build everything from scratch, and thus development should be much quicker — opposed to the decade development-hell that was The Last Guardian.
Ueda-san specifically said the following:
“I would like to finish a game as soon as quickly possible,” he said with a smile. “Many problems” were responsible for The Last Guardian taking “a very long time.”
The legendary director then added the following:
“The last three games we created I didn’t intend to be very similar to each other. When I start to create a game, always I think we will create something different. But the result was that in the three games there are some similarities. There’s a moment when one game links with another, but I didn’t put it in at the start, it happens in the process.
“So now, I think I’m creating something very different, but the end result? I can’t say.”
Whatever Ueda-san is working on, I wouldn’t expect an announcement anytime soon. In other recent and related news, Ueda-san revealed that he actually sent a list of changes he would like to see in the upcoming Shadow of the Colossus PS4 remake.
