Fumito Ueda And Team Ico Studio genDesign Tease New Game With 2021 Artwork, Wish to Deliver “A New Experience as Soon as Possible”

Fumito Ueda, author of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, teased his next game first announced in 2017 with a new gorgeous artwork.

Fumito Ueda, the main creator of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, seemingly teased his next game with a new artwork for New Years 2021. The artwork was shared through Fumito Ueda’s studio genDesign. (Thanks to Game’s Talk for pointing it out).

The far-right part of the artwork is brand new, and not from any of the previous games by Fumito Ueda. It appears to be using a similar art style as his past works.

Moreover, on Twitter, studio genDesign explained 2020 was a big step for the studio. As it found a publisher, Epic Games, for its next game. The studio is hard at work to deliver “a new experience as soon as possible”. genDesign is recruiting developers as well.

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are originally PS2 games released in 2001 and 2005 respectively. Both were critically highly-well received. The Last Guardian released on PS4 in 2016 after years long delays and a complicated development, seeing it was first announced in 2007. Moreover, unlike the other two, The Last Guardian is more of a mixed bag when it comes to its reception.

Fumito Ueda first mentioned his next game in 2017, soon after the release of The Last Guardian. Still in 2017, Ueda spoke a bit more of the game and teased it might be an open-world similar to Shadow of the Colossus. However, he also mentioned that as his three most popular games are very different from each other, it’s possible this fourth work will be quite different as well.

In 2018, after forming genDesign, Fumito Ueda mentioned his next game is still in a prototype phase. He most notably mentioned working with Kowloon Nights, a global fund dedicated to supporting independent developers. It’s also important to note that over the years, Fumito Ueda regularly mentioned in interviews how his games at release tend to be very different from how he envisioned them at first. This is very important to keep in mind.

Next, we heard in 2019 how Ueda was and his team were making “very good progress” and were looking for a publisher for the game. However, he stressed out the game has just been out of its prototyping phase.

Lastly, in March 2020, Epic Games Publishing announced it will be publishing the game. Now, we’re eager to learn more and see some gameplay.
