A polling of followers online by The Game Awards' official Twitter account has revealed that fans are eager for the announcement of a 3-D animated The Legend of Zelda movie.

The Game Awards on Sunday posed the question, "After the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which other game franchise should receive a 3D animated film?" bringing forth dozens of differing suggestions within its first hour live, but with one standing strong above the rest. Within the first 214 comments made on the post, 41 of them, or nearly 20 percent, mentioned The Legend of Zelda in some way — or at least shared a gif of a break-dancing Link. While many people replying to the thread made multiple suggestions, 71 separate games or game series made appearances in that initial list, though most struggled to get more than one or two mentions.

While 20 percent of the vote my not seem overwhelming, this was an open poll, meaning there were no restrictions on the suggestions that could be made. Furthermore, The Legend of Zelda more than tripled the number of mentions given to the second-place tie between space-faring Nintendo franchises Metroid and Star Fox, each of which received 13 mentions among that initial group of 214 comments. Rounding out the top five were Crash Bandicoot, the sole non-Nintendo IP, with 11 mentions, and Kirby with 10. Also making a showing close to the top of the mentioned games, several fans have speculated that Nintendo is already planning a Donkey Kong movie based on how much attention the trailers have already paid to the Seth Rogen-voiced ape.

As the two biggest and longest-lasting icons of the Nintendo brand, it's not too surprising that Mario fans would want to see a movie follow-up by Link. Some even mentioned the old cartoon show from the 1980s that divided its attention between stories from the two classic NES series.

Interestingly, a pair of commenters within the post's first hour seemed committed enough to The Super Mario Bros. Movie to want a Mario movie to follow up the Mario movie, which is set to release in theaters on April 7. Four others apparently haven't been satisfied with the partially animated, partially live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie series, as they cast their votes for more Sonic.

While the poll was far from an official one, it does shed some light on what the movie-going gaming community really wants to see next. It's also good news for Nintendo, as Link's next adventure, The Legend of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, is currently set to make its debut on Switch on May 12, and it appears to be the biggest first-party Nintendo game ever, at least if the file size is any indicator.
