The coronavirus pandemic has also forced Games Done Quick to make a change of plans, which means good news and bad news.

The bad news first: Summer Games Done Quick 2020 has been postponed. Originally scheduled to run June 21-28, the annual speedrunning marathon has been pushed back a couple months to Aug. 16-23 in Bloomington, Minn. The hope is that by then the spread of the COVID-19 virus will have gotten well under control, making large gatherings safe again.

The good news: Games Done Quick isn't staying idle during the pandemic, announcing a new online-only marathon. Corona Relief Done Quick will run through the weekend of April 17-19 and stream on the organizer's official Twitch channel. All donations from the event will go straight to Direct Relief, a humanitarian aid organization that specializes in offering help to those affected by poverty or emergencies, and is currently focused on providing healthcare workers with personal protective equipment and essential medical items during the pandemic.

Speedrunning submissions for Corona Relief Done Quick (CRDQ) are open now and will close next Thursday, April 2.

Submissions for Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ), meanwhile, have been wiped and will restart anew on April 29th. Attendee registration will open on June 7 with a July 20 deadline.

For fans, event organizers, and the gaming community at large, the past month has caused a lot of headaches and heartbreak, as the coronavirus outbreak led to either the postponement or outright cancellation of various conventions and events.

That said, Games Done Quick seems pretty confident that its summer marathon will continue on (even if it's going to be a little later than expected this year), and has found a way to quickly rally the speedrunning community, albeit from a distance, to try and lend a helping hand under extremely tough circumstances in the meantime.

In the past decade, Games Done Quick has been a major force for good within the gaming community, raising more than $25 million for charity through its events.

Awesome Games Done Quick raised $3.13 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation back in January, and the 2019 iteration of Summer Games Done Quick raised more than $3 million for Doctors Without Borders last June.

This year's SGDQ will again be in support of Doctors Without Borders.
