E3 2022 might have been a dud (it didn't exist, that's why) but we do at least have Gamescom 2022 to look forward to. And if the show's host, Geoff Keighley, is to be believed, the opening night will be one to remember. Or at the very least it'll be a fun way to kill a couple of hours.

The veteran host has spilled just a couple of beans relating to Gamescom Opening Night Live. No major beans have been spilled, mind you, but we do now know that the live stream will run as a two-hour live show with over 30 games being presented on stage in front of an audience of thousands.

And what are those games? Well, that's part of the surprise, but we do know ahead of time that Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds will take to the stage to announce its latest game; a brand new IP. Details are scant, as expected, but the developer's official Twitter account has dropped a couple of details about the soon-to-be-announced game.

It's going to be a departure from what Unknown Worlds is best known for - Subnautica, a first-person survival game - as the unnamed new IP will be a turn-based, sci-fi strategy game. As for the rest, we'll have to wait until the show itself to find out more.

We also know that Sonic Frontiers will be rolling out onto the stage at some point during the two-hour stream with new information and another look at the game. Expect a trailer and maybe even hope for a release date.

Gamescom is making its big return this year after going digital-only during the course of the ongoing pandemic. The return to the Koelnmesse will be a welcome one for fans and tradesfolk alike, but for those of us who can't make the journey, the show streams live on August 23rd at 8PM CET/ 7PM GMT / 2PM ET / 11AM PT.
