Gamestop Acquires Impulse, Their Friend to Their Right. Oh, and Also Spawn Labs.

April 1, 2011

Looks like GameStop’s really pushing to be some genuine competition in the digital distribution market, as they announced yesterday that they would be acquiring Impulse, one of the leaders in the digital distribution market. They also agreed to acquire Spawn Labs, which looks to be a streaming technology company with experience in video game streaming and whatnot.

While the Spawn Labs acquisition isn’t too major, the fact that GameStop now owns one of the top digital distributors on the Internet right now is a pretty big deal. While I don’t think anyone will ever approach the behomoth known as Steam, having constant competition in the market guarantees that no one will be too complacent in their services, and perhaps offer even better service than we’re previously used to. Time will only tell what GameStop decides to do with Impulse.

Allen is an utter whore of a gamer; he's completely open-minded to all games, be they AAA blockbusters or $5 casual children's games. His focus is on indie games specifically, valuing gameplay and ingenuity over sparkly visuals and ridiculous gimmicks. When he's not geeking out over the newest art game, he's out toning his sexy, sculpted shoulders while surfing epic 1.5ft waves, or having a good time with local, high-gravity microbrews.
