It seems the video game retailer might be listening. Gamestop California stores are beginning to close its doors amid recent controversy.

According to Kotaku, Gamestop said in a note to its stores, "We are closing our stores in California. The closure will remain in effect until further notice as we obtain more information from the California Governor's Office."

There is more confirmation of Gamestop California stores shutting down from a recent Reddit post. "Just got a call from my boss telling me there's a GSO message saying all California stores are shutting down effective immediately - direct order from the governor!" says the post from Reddit user Blubberyowl. "Gavin is calling Gamestop on their bullshit and it worked." Another post also confirms this.

The past 24 hours have been a wild ride for Gamestop and its employees. Just yesterday, Gamestop sent a memo to its stores to remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic. Calling its chain "essential retail," they even provided a document to give to law enforcement if the authorities attempted to shut the store down.

Just today, Youtuber CAMELOT331 posted a video where he managed to sneak on to a Gamestop regional conference call. Much of the questions asked from its employees were in regards to the coronavirus pandemic. This includes subjects such as store closures, trade-in policies, and payment options if stores were to close.

In regards to that last matter about payment, this is what the higher-ups had to say to its employees:

"Well, I think we already kind of talked about that. We don't know. In all honesty, that's pat of the discussions that we've been having and we're trying to navigate through, you know, difficult times and really uncharted territory. So, we're trying to come up with a plan of action that is, you know, going to support everybody. And certainly, we're trying to make the right decision. It's so complex and, you know, we are doing our best. I know for some of you, that's... that's difficult to hear because you want us to have answers for you. The truth is that we just don't have all the answers at this point, but we're working hard to get them. You know, we all have got a lot invested in this organization and in all of you and we certainly want to do the right thing."

According to CAMELOT331's tweet, this video came out 22 hours ago (as of this writing). This is around the same time Gamestop released specific actions it would be taking in its stores, which got updated two hours after the post.

Now, Gamestop California stores have shut down. Whether other states will follow suit is still unknown.
