In case you're like me and didn't know there was a Borderlands movie coming, good news! There's a Borderlands movie coming. Also good news, it already has a director, unlike the Uncharted movie which is slated to begin filming soon, sans an official director. Eli Roth, the director and producer behind Hostel, Knock Knock, The Green Inferno and more is helming the project. The announcement was made prematurely by Randy Pitchford via a Tweet on his account. Here's what Roth has to say about his role in directing the film:

“I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio. I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate – I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition. I look forward to bringing my own energy, ideas, and vision to the wild, fun, and endlessly creative world of the game. Randy Pitchford and everyone at Gearbox have been incredibly supportive of my ideas – it really feels like a perfect storm of creators coming together.  We are out to make a new classic, one which the fans of the game will love, but also one which will find new audiences globally.”

The movie already has a standout cast and creative team working behind the scenes. Craig Mazin, creator and writer of HBO's Chernobyl series, is writing the movie's script and Randy Pitchford is an executive producer. The feature is being produced through Lionsgate and filming is set to begin sometime this year.

With his history in all things gory and horrific, picking Eli Roth as the director seems a good choice. The world of Borderlands is bloody and terrifying in its own comedic way. Sure, there are poop and butt jokes, but each game ends with you killing eldritch abominations that would end a world. There's not much more horrific than that. The biggest challenge I can see coming to this team is writing interesting characters. While some Borderlands characters have personalities, others are rather two-dimensional. I also can't help but wonder what stylistic choices will be made. Borderlands has always looked animated, although I can't imagine this feature following suit. Whatever comes next for the Borderlands movie, you'll be able to find out about it here as news develops.
