Whether you enjoy the Gears of War franchise or not, you have to realize the third installment will be a heavy-hitter this fall. However, Epic Games isn’t looking for Gears of War 3 to dominate the multiplayer aspect of online gaming. This insight came from the latest OXM podcast featuring Epic executive producer, Rod Fergusson. OXM asked Mr. Fergusson if the Gears 3 multiplayer failed to impress, would Epic drop online portions of future titles. His reply was rather humble and down to earth. “I hope we never have to have that conversation! It was never our intention to try to dominate, be the number one in terms of multiplayer.”
He went on to point out Black Ops and its “25 million or whatever” audience. They’re not trying to accomplish or beat down Call of Duty (unlike EA and Battlefield 3) stats. Epic just wants Gears of War 3 to be a game that the audience loves to play. In other words they just want to “have a more well-rounded game.” Fergusson hopes that people will play Gears 3 for the singleplayer and once they beat it the gamer will stay for the multiplayer. Gears of War 3 hits 360s everywhere September 20th.
