Gears of War 3 Hits Store Shelves
The highly-anticipated third installment of the Gears of War franchise was released last night to much pomp and celebration. Touted as the highest-rated game released exclusively for the XBox 360 this year, Gears of War 3 was released at midnight to anxious fans in 20,000 worldwide retail locations.
Microsoft Corporate Vice President Phil Spencer hailed the launch as the kick-off to “the biggest holiday season of blockbuster games in the history of the Xbox 360.” Read on for more.
“This is our biggest ‘Gears’ game yet, and even though it’s the third installment in the trilogy, it’s the easiest to jump into if you’re a new fan,” added Cliff Bleszinski, Design Director of Epic Games. “We’ve added more cooperative gameplay options and built in accessibility features throughout the game to make it approachable and fun for new players and series veterans alike.”
Critics are already advertising Gears 3 as this holiday season’s must-have game, citing its campaign as “one of the most exciting in the system” and a cinematic script by renowned science fiction and New York Times bestselling author Karen Traviss.
To make it even sweeter, Epic is offering three editions of the game: Standard, Limited, and Epic. The Standard Edition includes the game only, while the Limited Edition includes exclusive digital content. The Epic Edition is loaded with Gears goodies, including a PVC statue of Marcus Fenix and the 96-page The Art and Design of Gears of War art book, depicting concept art from the past ten years of the Gears’ production.
Gears of War 3 marks the conclusion to the celebrated Gears trilogy, pitting series hero Marcus Fenix and his Delta Squad against the Lambents in a final desperate showdown to protect what remains of humankind.
Developed exclusively for Xbox 360, Gears of War 3 is now available in North America and Europe and will be released in Japan on Sept. 22.
