Gears of War developer The Coalition has certainly not been afraid to branch out from just shooters with their hit property over the last few years. We've already seen the Gears Pop! spin-off and Gears Tactics is on the horizon. Well, it's time to add another game to the catalog, with Gears of War: The Card Game coming later this year.

The game is being developed by Steamforged Games. They've previously worked on board game adaptations of popular video game franchises like Dark Souls, Horizon Zero Dawn, Devil May Cry, and Resident Evil 2. Interestingly, many of those games were miniature-heavy, whereas the Gears of War game will be card-based. That said, they do some experience with the Dark Souls card game, so it's not like this is brand-new territory for the team.

Heading up development is Tyler Bielman, who previously designed the Mirrodin and Darksteel expansions for Magic: The Gathering. His knowledge of card games will certainly come in handy. Gears of War: The Card Game is a story-driven campaign game. Each scenario you play through will present you with choices that will inform follow-up scenarios. Details are still a little scarce, but it reminds me a bit of Shadowrun: Crossfire, an excellent deckbuilder from Catalyst Game Labs.

The team actually brought a demo version of the game to last weekend's Gears 5 Esports event in Mexico. From the photos, it looks like a competitive game; however, the press release on the Gears of War site mentions "work(ing) together, fight(ing) together, and stand(ing) together". To me, that reads as a co-op game, but it's not completely clear. That said, Steamforged should clear up those details as they reveal more info in the coming weeks.
