Genshin 1.4 - Why Fans Are Unhappy With The Rosaria Patch Notes?

What happened with Rosaria in Genshin 1.4?

On March 15, miHoYo published all of the patch notes for Genshin Impact 1.4 Invitation of Windblume, and most notably noted that the 3D model for Rosaria was changed. This has been irking some of the fanbase for a few days, but miHoYo has now directly addressed the matter. What exactly happened?

The patch notes for Genshin 1.4, regarding Rosaria, note that “her appearance was adjusted”. Since the release of the 1.4 trailer and the official gameplay videos featuring the Mondstadt nun, several players have noticed Rosaria’s model has changed compared to her 1.2 appearance as an NPC. Compared to her first appearance, the chest size of Rosaria has been slightly reduced.

On hoYoLAB, the official forums of Genshin Impact developer miHoYo, several fans are angry about this model change for Rosaria. Campaigning against the change and censorship. Meanwhile other groups of fans also shared various theories as to why the change happened.

In particular, several fans noted Genshin Impact uses the same 3D models for multiple characters. The female characters list with the biggest chest size right now include Beidou and Lisa. However, Rosaria was even bigger than those two in 1.2. As such, according to this theory, miHoYo had two choices. Making a specific model for Rosaria from scratch, or reuse existing models. The first choice would mean more development time and money spent. This theory could definitely explain why the model change happened.

Genshin Impact 1.4 And Rosaria Reveal Trailer (Japanese Dub)

Personally speaking, I don’t believe one second this is a case of censorship. In the first place, Genshin Impact, like many Japanese-stylized media, features unrealistic breast bounce for sexual fanservice. If miHoYo wanted to censor something, it’s nonsensical to “censor” Rosaria’s chest by making it slightly smaller, and then keep those bouncing breast animations anyway. I definitely think they simply didn’t feel like using additional time and money for the model of a single four star Cryo Polearm character.

Genshin Impact, developed by miHoYo, is available on PC, PS4, PS5 via backward compatibility, and Mobile. The game was also announced on Switch, but has no release date on the system yet.
